Highway 2 to Mountain High |
|
I struck out this April 4th morning to go skiing at one of the local ski resorts in the San Bernadino mountains. Mountain High is the closest resort to my home in the Northern End of the San Fernando Valley and I needed to try the new boots I just bought. As you know from reading several of my expedition stories, I have bad feet. But I love to ski and so I shelled out $850.00 for the fanciest, best fitting boots you can get. I went to a boot fitter in Studio City who was recommended to me as the best in the business. I skied till ll:30 AM. About three hours. By that time my right ankle felt like some one had slipped a rock into my boot. Every time I turned, stepped, or walked it hurt. I have an appointment with the best boot fitter in Studio City the day after tomorrow to fix them. The reason I'm telling you all this is because I was pleasantly surprised by the lush growth of wild flowers along highway 2 leading to Mountain High which is near Wrightwood. The record setting rains in Southern California have left our deserts awash with a stunning array of wild flowers and the high desert areas in Antelope Valley near Llano are no exception. On the way home, I stopped along the side of the road and took the pictures below. |
